Power Distribution

Copper busbars are laminated with heavy gauge insulation tapes. Operating in difficult environments, they conduct high current and meet multi-year reliability expectations. GTS has a long history and considerable experience in supplying the LBB (Laminated Busbar) industry for electric trains and vehicles, renewable energies and industrial applications.

Case Study

High-Temperature Bus-Bar systems: Coverlay with high-temperature epoxy

Project Target:

With continuing advances in Power Distribution technologies, such as the use of higher frequency power modules, there is an ever-increasing demand for high quality, high temperature insulations. In response to this and in discussion with our customers, GTS Flexible Materials has instigated a ‘High-Temperature Bus-Bar’ project, specifically aimed at the development of high temperature adhesive systems for our POWER LINE products.

Project Set-up:

There was an initial identification of suitable films for use through the project, based on GTS’ extensive knowledge of their behaviour, plus a review of availability and cost. Adhesive types previously tested for high temperature were examined and selected for evaluation.

Project Execution:

A Design of Experiments program was set up, testing for functionality such as temperature and humidity ageing, plus flammability and chemical resistance. Bonding trials simulating customer lamination processes on nickel plated copper plates were also carried out.

Project Result:

The first in this series of High-Temperature Bus-Bar systems was a modified Epoxy adhesive with an operating temperature of 125°C. The adhesive is flame-retardant, RoHS compliant and antimony-free. The combination of this adhesive system with a low-oligomer polyester film is suitable for high-temperature applications withstanding 125°C.
